WPS (Women Peace and Security) Reception Hosted by the Mission of Japan to the African Union

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8) , the Mission of Japan hosted a WPS reception at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan to the African Union.

The reception brought together key figures from the African Union, diplomatic corps, and other stakeholders actively engaged in WPS and women’s issues, including the African Union Commission (AUC) Office of the Special Envoy for WPS. The event aimed to strengthen collaboration on the WPS agenda.

With around 30 participants, the evening fostered lively discussions and meaningful exchanges.

At the outset, H.E. NAKAGAWA Tsutomu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the African Union, reaffirmed Japan’s continued commitment to domestic and international efforts in the field of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). As a concrete initiative, he announced Japan’s plan to newly support the activities of the AUC Special Envoy’s Office for WPS.
In response, Mr. Daniel Masamba, from the WPS Special Envoy’s Office, expressed gratitude for Japan’s support.

Furthermore, representing female African ambassadors in Ethiopia, H.E. Ms. Rose Sakala, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the AU and Ambassador to Ethiopia, emphasized that achieving peace on the African continent requires women’s participation, particularly in political spheres, including engagement in peace processes. She also expressed her appreciation for Japan’s commitment and support for WPS initiatives in Africa.

At the event, guests were treated to Japanese cuisine prepared by the residence chef and Japanese Sake. Additionally, amazake was served as a celebratory drink for the Girls’ day *Hinamatsuri* in Japan (A Japanese Seasonal Festival celebrated on March 3). 
 
A traditional *Hina* doll display was set up at the venue, and following the guests' remarks, a representative from the Mission gave a brief explanation of the customs and traditions of *Hinamatsuri*. 
 
Alongside the Japanese food offerings, the event provided participants with a unique opportunity to experience Japan’s cultural and culinary traditions related to women.
