Completion of the FAO-led project “Water-related disasters control and optimizing excess water in Rwanda and Kenya”

On July 17, 2025, in Kigali, a completion ceremony was held for the FAO-led project “Flood Control Measures and Reuse of Excess Water Sources in Rwanda and Kenya,” implemented under the supplementary budget of the Government of Japan for the fiscal year 2023.The project aimed to prevent flood-related loss of life and damage to farmland caused by soil erosion, as well as promote the reuse of surplus rainwater for agricultural purposes through measures such as the construction of reservoirs and the expansion of waterways. In Rwanda, two projects were implemented, including the construction of 2.25 km of flood control canals, reservoirs, and an irrigation system to support agriculture even during the dry season, benefiting 5,775 households (approximately 28,875 people). In Kenya, the construction of reservoirs, training for farmers and local officials on disaster prevention and irrigation, and the introduction of certified hybrid seeds to improve crop yields were implemented, significantly contributing to flood prevention and the expansion of agricultural production.
